Miracles

Do miracles really happen ?

Surely the miracles Jesus performed can now be explained by modern science ?

What do you think?

A miracle is somehting that defies scientific explanation. Therefore there will always be debate about miracles since they are by definition impossible.

Wasn't the purpose of miracles happening in the bible that Jesus could point to them as a sign that he was divine?

Couldn't a miracle happening today be attributed to any god?

God wants us to have faith in him without having to use miracles to persuade us. Why does he then break that rule and allow miracles to happen some of the time to some people

Doesn't he want us to learn from whatever bad thing has happened to increase our need in him, rather than create a miracle to undo it and then negate the need for reliance on him?

Miracles are called "signs" in John's Gospel, and they are supposed to encourage faith, although when someone demands signs they are turned down.

Just a quick feedback from the event...!

We looked in lots of detail at John's gospel and the seven "signs" he reports. It's fascinating to read them all in a short time - try it!

Did anybody watch the BBC programme on Sun eve on miracles?

I didn't know that raising Lazarus was to mirrir watch Elijah did, or that feeding 5000 or water into wine was him being Moses, or that walking on water was him being Joshua. Is this true or are they trying to read too much into them?

I think they are reading this the wrong way , although the prog was very good otherwise.

I think most of the Old Testament pre-figures Jesus - it paints pictures of the real thing that was to come.
