Church in a pub

Well we did it. Thankyou to everyone who came along for our first Friday Service in the pub.
Hope you all enjoyed it....we made an impression on one patron in particular so lets hope our numbers will increase in the coming weeks.

Lovely to meet Nigel too and I hope being in the 'hotseat' wasn't too traumatic.
If you want to know more about him and his impression of Friday night have a look here:

He explains it all much more eloquently than I could.

Next week we will meet in theRoebuck again so please join us if you can.
Simon will be sharing his chosen bible story and if you are happy to share your personal stories, you can be grilled in the hotseat too.

Location, location, location CHANGED. At last not in a church. Sounds like a good idea to me meeting in a pub. Christians are normal people, they have the same lives to lead as normal non-christians, and why not meet in a pub. Its a great witness to the community that Christians are normal. It sounds as though one drinker thinks so. Keep it up and shine in the community.

I went on the Walk for Friendship last Saturday and spread the word re Friday meetings in the 'world church'ie. outside of our church building. We may be joined by others - wow !

It was with a little trepidation that I ventured into the Roebuck: not because it was a public house but because we were moving away from the cosy comfort of a church building into the real world.

However I was glad I was there: a pub means a public house, a place for the public to meet and what better way to meet together but in view of the community and not hidden away.

I too hope for an increase in numbers - then we shall have to move to two pubs!!

I was standing at the bar when your group came in to the Buck. I did overhear some bits of your conversation. I may pluck up courage and join you next week.I suppose I'm shy, I used to work for a cement company near Grassington but had to leave because I wasn't a good mixer !

That's funny! As long as you are not a hardened athiest....

But for an athiest not to beleive in something don't they have to beleive that there is something

I totally perplexed somebody I know in Leeds the other day when I explained about the Friday Service congregation: he was still trying to understand meeting on a Friday then the location - he was lost for words!

However I have somehow found it easier to talk about it and, more importantly, why. Getting to talk about my faith after a long time when opportunities have been limited does seem to have been kick-started into action.

So benefits all round.

I have just been looking through "The Screwtape Letters" and there is this description of the church which will turn people off (exactly what Screwtape wanted)

....

goes inside, he sees the local ...bustling up to offer him one shiny little book containing a liturgy which neither of them understands, and one shabby little book ...of a number of religious lyrics, mostly bad...

You have to remember that C S Lewis was not averse to liturgy nor tradition; and nor does the image accurately reflect some of the services held in the building for the St Mark's church but I think it sums up what is quite a commonly held view of church.

Hi largegnome
I look forward to meeting you tomorrow then ?
I'm not sure I can cope with any more jokes though...the regulars are bad enough!
