I wonder if we sometimes give meetings like this a miss - we think we know all about Tear Fund and we will only be asked for more money etc.
But it's important to keep up-to-date, isn't it?
And as the weekend is about Harvest too, it would be too easy to presume upon the Lord's goodness in these days of all-year-round availability of foos in supermarkets.
Is Harvest outdated then?

Coming from a Catholic background I don't really understand what the 'harvest' theme is ...but I guess its about celebrating the good things God has given us and this doesnt just mean food then does it.
I was talking to a group of young mums today and the subject of third world poverty came up (in a baby massage class funnily enough) ...and I wish I'd had more to say on the subject such as giving facts and information and how WE can help...so I'm hoping that by the end of Friday I will have a bit more knowledge :)

Yes there is third world poverty, but we should not forget closer to home. In the financial year 2003/04 it is recorded that 12 Million people were living on a poverty income bracket. In fact nearly 3 Billion people around the world live on less than 2 Dollars a day. Frightening thought isn't it.
The writer of Deuteronomy writes that, 'there should be no poor among you.' But later he writes, 'There will always be poor people in the land.'

What can we therefore do? Have Bono and Bob Geldoff doing the right thing or is it going to take more?

harvest time is acknowlegement of the earth's produce whether it be food/water/access to goods and services. Harvest for me is understanding that some 80% of the worlds population do not have these advantages. One example is clean water. I've seen it myself.Harvest is not outdated very much like rememberance day.

A Bible passage from Friday.....
James 5 (NIV version)
Warning to Rich Oppressors
'Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered innocent men,who were not opposing you.

Strong words aren't they. They are very relevant to the world today, but what can we do ?
