A prophetic connection ?

On Friday we began to discuss possible parallels between Joseph (son of Jacob) and Jesus.

Here's some more food for thought http://dutyisours.com/jsummary.htm

Are these coincidences or a sign of things to come ?

This week we find out what happens when Joseph's brothers turn up in Egypt.

I'm sure some of the connections in the list that Julie has linked to are rather fanciful - as is some of the rest of that website (I found it so don't blame Julie..)

But what are people's thoughts on the way the Old Testament pre-figures Jesus? Is it just a testimony to the extraordinary plan God was preparing or can we learn about Jesus from the Old Testament?

I recall reading many years ago:

the old is in the new revealed, the new is in the old concealed

so some of the OT is looking forward to the NT, but can we not also see the stories just as accounts of historical events.

Really the accounts in Genesis could be seen as operating on three levels: the straight story, applications and teaching for then and thirdly a parallel with the NT. I guess it is the last bit that can seem, to some, drawn out more than may be credible but also some fascinating echoes or faint reflections of what was to come.

Given that God was behind the human authorship of the bible, should we be so surprised that as divinely inspired writers committed the accounts to papyrus or whatever, that there are some neat comparisons to be found?
