Poverty continued...

Last Friday Comic relief on the television really highlighted to millions of us that we live in a world where there is much poverty and injustice.

Jesus told his disciples ' The poor will always be among you' (Matt 26:11)

Did God intend a world of oppression, disease, starvation and misery ?

Are we to simply tolerate this as the way things are ?

Poverty

Over 11 million people live in a low income household in the UK.
More than 4 million adults received less than the minimum wage for working in 2006.
Adults in the poorest of our society are twice as likely to develop mental illness.
Children from manual social backgrounds are 1 and half times more likely to die as infants than those from other backgrounds.
A third of homes in England where classed as non-decent in 2004.

This Friday John Long is going to talk to us about Christians Against Poverty
A National Debt Counselling service which offers hope and solutions to people in financial difficulty.

Sacrifice

Sacrifice is a concept frequently used in the Bible. From the laws of the Old Testament regarding animal sacrifices, burnt offerings etc to that in the New Testament of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross for the forgiveness of sins.

As Lent approaches we may consider 'giving up' something or doing something extra as an act of self sacrifice.
Is sacrifice a punishment... a penalty for sin ?
Does God desire sacrifice and suffering ?
What does Paul mean in Romans 12:1 when he says ' Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to his service and pleasing to him' ?

Back Online !

After weeks of being computer less I am now back to update the blog.
Sorry for the blip.

Last Friday despite the snow (which kept me indoors ) Bob showed the BBC Drama 'Born Equal' which is likely to create much debate and discussion this Friday 16th.

Join us as we consider the issues it raised and what the Bible says.
